  • The Barunga Festival is an iconic event that is meant to celebrate the best of remote indigenous Australia. It was first held in 1985 and was an idea of Bangardi Lee, who was then the leader of the Bagala clan.

Since it was started, it has been held on an annual basis on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. It attracts thousands of people from all parts of the world, and they camp in the small remote area. At the festival, people participate in a program of music, traditional arts, and cultural activities.

Visitors of all ages are welcome to the event as it will allow them to engage with social and political issues. It is also an important forum for sharing ideas. The festival is the only time of the year when you can visit Barunga without a permit.
